Jaleo Real is part of a street rumba genre known in Barcelona as neocalorrismo [neo-gypsydom]. Cited in Songlines as one of the most promising bands in Barcelona's dynamic music scene, their latest album is a mixture of reggae, Cuban son, flamenco and tango all hooked up to the vigorous musical energy of street Rumba.
The band was created in Barcelona in 2002, shortly after the last tour of Radio Bemba, the collective created by Manu Chao, when Gerard, once percussionist of this collective, and his friend Sito Barbero, decided to form a band that would play a street rumba bringing up the real neighbourhood spirit. Kike and Sergi "Palito" Barbero, Sito's brothers, soon joined them, followed by Gambeat, Radio Bemba's bass player, and Willy Fuego y la Matahary, now singers of the Kinky Beat. The band is now composed by Sito Barbero, lead vocals and cross flute, Kike Barbero, guitar and vocals, Sergio Barbero, Flamenco guitar and chorus, Tito Bonacera, bass player and chorus, and Daniel Bianchi, cajón flamenco and chorus.
