WOMEX 13 Official Showcase Selection

Vojasa was formed just last year by a group of friends from several well-known Hungarian Gypsy groups such as Romano Drom, Khamoro, Nomada and Kalyi Jag, all seasoned purveyors of traditional Vlach Roma music. The line-up of guitars, mandolin, violin and the traditional aluminium water-can percussion was augmented by a drummer and a bassist and they had so much fun they decided to call the band Vojasa, which means "cheerful". This is Vlach Gypsy music sung in Romanes and performed with a rocking energy and a positive attitude that is part of their plan to counter anti-Gypsy feelings in Hungary and spread awareness of their culture further afield, which they've already been doing on major stages such as the Sziget festival in Budapest and the Festival des Vieilles Charrues in France.
