Way Out West has developed a unique and alluring sound that blends Vietnamese and African influences with jazz in a suprising and vibrant manner. Their first album, Footscray Station (Newmarket 2003), was described in the Australian Financial Review as having, “a distinctly Asian flavour, thanks to the bubbling, ethereal sounds of Nguyen's instruments, yet at the same time Knight and Williamson introduce a clear Western touch while Pereira in places takes it all the way to Africa.” Way Out West’s distinctive sound has gained them a reputation as one of the most innovative and exciting newer groups on the Australian music scene. Recently they performed at major international festivals including Veneto Jazz, Montreal, Vancouver, and Takatsuki Jazz Street in Japan, winning rave reviews.
