Singer Paola Marquez from Bogota, Colombia, has been working with jazz, bossanova and latin-bands for the last years. Now she decided to go back to the roots of Afro-Colombian music focusing on cumbia and other Afro-Colombian rhythms. The rhythm section of Maguare consists of traditional percussionists Javier Cabrera and Core Pareja, playing the tambora, tambor alegre, llamador, maracas, ... Backed up by a section of five horns, double bass, accordeon and organ, they garantee to bring you the real deal. Maguare plays a mix of Afro-Colombian beats in the spirit of Toto La Momposina and 60's ballroom-cumbia of Lucho Bermudez, Lito Barrientes, a.o.
Maguare are traditional Colombian drums used by Amazonian Indians to communicate over long distances. According to the rate and to the intensity of the sound, the indigenous differentiate the call and interpret the codes sent by their neighbours, which can be of joy, sadness, danger alerts, etc. Maguare can be heard over several kilometres. They are also used for ceremonial purposes, to gather people and announce ceremonial dances and other rituals.
