company description

World music has come to occupy an important role in the cultural sector: in France alone, there are roughly 500 concert venues, as well as 400 festivals, 250 booking agents, 175 labels, 100 journalists specialised in the genre, and more than 1,800 individual artists involved. (source: IRMA, March 2010)

Zone Franche is a network that gathers together 210 professional organisations which work towards the common goal of musical diversity, representing the entire web of activities (festivals, concert venues, producers, managers, labels, publishers, media, professional markets, etc.) and 20 countries throughout the world.
The main objectives of Zone Franche are to promote world music and to support those involved in this field, helping to affirm the core values that it conveys, and confirm its role of protecting cultural diversity. The support and protection of our professionals is one of our most effective means of achieving these aims.

The actions of the network are based on 5 principal fields of activity:

-Representation and political action: management of the "Comité Visa Artistes" (lobbying and intervention in problematic visa cases), involvement of the network in representative cultural bodies, project of evaluation in respect to the Unesco conventions on cultural diversity and saveguarding of the intangible cultural heritage.

-Promotion, public awareness and media: world music image enhancement and working for a broader public visibility, publication of the Memo Guide.

-International action: management of the European project "ACP Music Festivals Network", actions to support artists circulation, coaching for professionalisation and structuring of cultural operators in the South, etc.

-Services to members: delegations on professional markets, organisation of thematical encounters and meetings, structuring a communication platform (www.zonefranche.com <http://www.zonefranche.com> ), common tools (Memo), preferential tariffs among its selected providers, personalised advice, etc.

-Implementing surveys and researches: organising the "Etats Généraux des Musiques du Mondeé forum (2009), study of the programming of world music outside of its specialized stages, projects including a comprehensive study on world music festivals audience and their expectations.
