As outlined in our WOMEX Code of Conduct, we are committed to creating a respectful, considerate and discrimination-sensitive space for everyone taking part in WOMEX. To help put this commitment into practice, we develop guidelines, support mechanisms, and build staff capacity to foster a safer and more inclusive environment on-site at our event. Our Awareness Concept is based on the principles of our Code of Conduct and is centred around three key elements: atmosphere, approach and action.

Atmosphere

We promote an atmosphere of sensitivity, understanding and mutual respect as well as self-reflectivity and the call to respect other people’s boundaries as well as your own. Our commitment to working towards such an environment is formalised in our WOMEX Code of Conduct.

Approach

We recognise that discrimination is a socially constructed, persistent reality that can occur anytime and anywhere, on individual, structural and institutional levels. Our approach is to acknowledge this reality and its implications. We work on creating a safer environment that aims to reduce pre-conditions that are favourable to discrimination, all the while providing support to those affected, within the scope of our resources. When incidents occur, we respond with care and following the guiding principle of centring the person affected by discrimination, rather than the person accused of it.

Action

We inform all participants and staff about our Awareness Concept and Code of Conduct and ensure that an on-site Awareness Team is visible and accessible throughout the event. If discrimination, harassment or boundary violations occur, we listen to those affected, provide a confidential space to talk, and offer practical support where possible, including access to a quiet room if needed.
