Feet in the tradition, head in the future, the four musicians of Urban Village set out to raise awareness of the culture and history of the South African township of Soweto, the dormitory town designed by the apartheid regime which became home to people from all over the country, bringing their diverse cultural identities with them. Urban Village draw their inspiration from their upbringing in the township and their music reflects their assimilation of its rich heritage, mixing folk music, Zulu rock, Xhosa funk, mbaqanga, maskandi, hip-hop, jazz, and the spiritual energy of South African choirs. All this is channelled through their stripped-down and ultra-tight line-up of guitarist Lerato Lichaba, bassist Simangaliso Dlamini, drummer Xolani Mtshali, and the flute and mbira of lead vocalist Tubatsi Mpho Moloi.
