Chapulines plays a unique interpretation of son jarocho, a traditional Mexican music genre from the south of the state of Veracruz. The band is also strongly inspired by rhythms and sounds from places like Cuba and Colombia. the Caribbean influences can be heard in their own compositions, which they alternate with songs from the traditional repertoire.
The band was formed in Mexico at the shore of the beautiful lagoon of Bacalar after a musical encounter between singer and Jarana player Beto Robledo Zaragoza (MX) and violinist Graciela Zaera Moraña (ES). Back in Europe, the group was completed with Antoon Kindekens (BE) on percussion and Dennis Nicles Cobas (CU) on double bass. They have been playing concerts together since late 2019 with Ghent (Belgium) as their home base.
