Tama Waipara graduated with a Masters degree in Music from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in New York, and was immediately signed by New York label ObliqSound. He released his debut album Triumph of Time to high critical acclaim at Central Park Summerstage in New York, which he followed with a European tour, including opening for Fat Freddy's Drop and Nathan Haines in London.
Tama has since returned to New Zealand to release a further two albums and has recently released his third studio album, "Fill Up The Silence", recorded in New York at The Bunker Studio in Brooklyn with Producer/ Engineer Aaron Nevezie (The Black Keys, Tune-Yards, Questlove). "Fill Up The Silence" reached 5 on iTunes NZ, debuted at 6 on the NZ Charts, with single "Medicine Man" nominated for an APRA Silver Scroll Awards.
As a musician Tama has collaborated and recorded alongside the likes of drummer Kim Thompson (Beyonce), grammy nominated American artist Emily King (currently on tour with Emeli Sande), NZ Jazz giant Nathan Haines and Annie Crummer. He was also featured alongside the incredible Maisey Rika on her breakout 1 Album, Whitiora this year and also featured on He Rangi Paihuarere, a tribute album to the late Dr Hirini Melbourne which earned WMMA award for best traditional album.
He has recently performed with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Chamber Orchestra and is currently performing in Silo Theatre's BREL alongside Jon Toogood, Julia Deans and Jennifer Ward-Lealand.
