Aysanabee is an Oji-Cree singer-songwriter who has risen from growing up in a remote, off-grid location in the far northern region of Canada to make history as the first Indigenous artist to win the JUNO Awards for both Alternative Album of the Year and Songwriter of the Year in 2024. It's been a journey of self-discovery, spurred on by a near-death experience in the wilderness which decided him to make something of his life and follow his passion for music. He moved to Toronto, where during lock-down, he began long zoom-talks with his grandfather, whose stories of his experiences in Residential School inspired the debut album Watin, exploring his grandfather's legacy and the broader Indigenous experience. On his new release, ‘Here and Now’, Aysanbee applies his soulful voice to themes of love and learning beyond trauma.
