WOMEX 13 Official Showcase Selection

After single-handedly inventing an Albanian brass-band tradition, Fanfara Tirana toured all over Europe, bringing their take on the Balkan brass boom mixed with the great polyphonic vocal traditions, embodied in the presence of the veteran singer Hysni Niko Zela, to the festival stages of Womad, Roskilde, Sziget and beyond. Now they're blazing fresh mountain trails with a creative collaboration with the London-based no-borders dance fusioneers Transglobal Underground. A flurry of files and ideas passed between the two camps and the resulting Kabatronics album garnered fulsome praise for transcending the surface-scratching of much global electronica and becoming a true cross-cultural exchange. An Albanian wedding party in a Jamaican Dancehall, a jamboree of kabamuffinery, poly-raggaphony and deep-pan-Balkanicity where cifteli meets sitar, ghajda meets dhol and the corks are thrown away as soon as the bottles are opened.
