One of the most successful female singers/songwriters in Mali and West Africa today, Rokia Traoré will return to Ljubljana only two months after delivering a keynote speech at the European Jazz Conference. The concert will feature the music part of her multi-genre trilogy, Dream Mandé.
“My roots are deeply anchored in the Mandingo culture. Yet I wasn’t immersed in Malian music at the source, having spent most of my childhood outside Mali moving with the work of my father who was a diplomat. As a noble Bambara, not belonging to a griot caste prevented me from learning and interpreting traditional griot songs. (...) The Dream Mandé - Bamanan Djourou project is structured around the griot tradition of oral history storytelling. At the same time it is a modern project born out of inevitable changes to the form that can complement the past using contemporary concepts, a vision of contextualised perception that goes against tradition.
