The work done by the popular movements is inseparable from the social history of modern Sweden. The three biggest movements of all – the labour movement, the revivalist movement and the temperance movement – had, from the very inception, an abundant, distinctive musical tradition constituting a protest against the musical establishment, or at least an alternative or supplement to it. These musical subcultures are an important part of Sweden’s musical heritage and have contributed a great deal to the musical seen as we know it today.
In an exciting cavalcade alternating between historic and new recordings, we take part in a revivalist meeting, and admission ceremony, a strike meeting and other gatherings of the popular movements where the music had an important part to play.
