Mumbai-born, London-based, multi-award-winning sarod virtuoso and composer, Soumik Datta pursues his artistic vision across boundaries, cultures & art forms. At the heart of his prolific creative output is the evocative voice of the Hindustani Sarod, the 19-stringed fretless lute he first encountered at the age of twelve. He studied under sarod master Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta and has since carried the instrument into different worlds, from dance to film – in collaboration with his brother, film-maker Souvid Datta – and from deep traditional roots to contemporary sounds, devising live performances where Sarod & Carnatic violin collide with audio clips of the voices of refugees, historical warnings, border officials, blending into an exploration of memory, migration & identity, investigating the space “between the beauty of Indian classical music and the grim reality of urgent humanitarian issues".
