[mainpage]Both the intercontinental and innovative perspective of Classical:NEXT will be underlined at the first night: The Canadian Music Centre and the Canada Council for the Arts will host the "Canada:NEXT" opening gala. In the course of the evening Martin Hoffmann (Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation) will speak on stage as part of a double keynote together with Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin (Rotterdam Philharmonic & Philadelphia Orchestra), who will be sharing his insights over video. Find more information about the double keynote on C:N NET, here.

The opening programme will be curated by David Pay, Artistic Director of Vancouver's classical, new, and genre-bending concert series Music on Main, showcasing its reputation for storytelling in a post-classical age. The detailed set-up of the opening is yet to be fully announced. Live appearances by a range of Canadian artists including legendary Inuit throat-singer Tanya Tagaq and the Cecilia String Quartet, as well as a video speech from the outstanding soprano and performing conductor Barbara Hannigan, are already confirmed.

Glenn Hodgins, Executive Director of the Canadian Music Centre, sees the evening in a tradition of Canadian music innovation:

"Canada is filled with the kind of fresh thinking that led Glenn Gould to change the face of the recording industry and R. Murray Schafer to invent soundscape. The Canadian Music Centre is proud to be working with the Canada Council for the Arts as a presenting partner for the fourth iteration of Classical:NEXT."
