Blasting through style-borders, Sarab joyfully mix Arabic music, jazz and psychedelic rock to create cinematic electronic trance edifices built on sinuous melodies navigating between Eastern and European scales, through mellifluous ornamentation and rousing symphonic slabs of sound that contain quiet rooms of Syrian poetry. Born from the meeting between the Franco-Syrian singer Climène Zarkan and guitarist Baptiste Ferrandis – first as a duo playing songs composed by Climène's father, renowned oud player, Bachar Zarkan – eventually growing into a six-piece collective-composing entity, drawing its strength from its diversity of musical backgrounds. Trombonist Robinson Khoury, pianist Thibault Gomez, bassist Timothée Robert and drummer Paul Berne are all ubiquitous collaborators and bandleaders on the contemporary experimental jazz scene. Sarab's 2023 release, Qawalebese Tape, honours the Egyptian and Syrian repertoires that provide the seeds for their cross-pollinating expositions.
