During the Gothenburg Opera’s last 25 years, the opera genre has almost been considered indispensable for the people of Gothenburg. That this has not always been the case becomes evident in the booklet for vol. 17 in Caprice Records’ anthology Collector’s Classics. The accompanying three CDs are an audio documentation of the Gothenburg Opera’s predecessor, the Lyrical Theatre and its activities during its first three decades until 1952.
AB Göteborgs Lyriska Teater in Gothenburg was the name of Stora Teatern’s radical restart after having been a guest performance stage for various traveling operetta and opera companies for more than six decades. After a thorough modernization, in 1920, it was able to offer not only the people of Gothenburg, but the entire Swedish cultural sector complete opera productions, with everything an opera house requires of soloists, choir, ballet, orchestra, stage workers, workshops, and more.
