Batucada Sound Machine are a dynamic 10-piece group who have captivated audiences at festivals around the world with their breathtaking variety of tempos, timings, beats, styles and raw on-stage energy.

The band’s three-piece samba/reggae percussion line-up and all star horn section intertwine Brazilian, funk, hip-hop, reggae, afro-beat and Pacific soul influences.

Formed in 2003, the group began as a maverick bunch of drummers meeting in a dimly lit nightclub to experiment with a fusion of Brazilian rhythms, Pacific soul and funk influences. The success of this jam-night led to a regular monthly event, attracting an ever more diverse group of talented musicians. The result was Batucada Sound Machine.

Batucada Sound Machine’s strength and reputation is in their live performance. The band thrives in a festive atmosphere and has earned a well-deserved reputation for getting crowds moving whether they are performing in Europe, Asia or Oceania.

Batucada Sound Machine have captivated audiences at numerous well-respected events including Womad (UK/NZ), The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The Afro Latino Festival, Wereldfeest, and Ollin Kan Festival. At home, they have performed at New Zealand’s biggest events, Splore, Parihaka, Rhythm & Vines, Big Day Out and many more.

Their debut album “Rhythm And Rhyme” (2007) was produced by renowned music creator Neil Sparkes and mixed at the legendary Avatar Studios. “Rhythm And Rhyme” (available on iTunes) climbed to the top of the Independent NZ Music charts. Batucada Sound Machine are working on their third album and will showcase their new material while on tour in Europe, the album will be released in late 2011.
