In the present study, Sotiris Chianis attempts to cover the musical tradition of Skyros, examining and presenting 168 examples of songs. The approach to this rare and precious material has been a multifaceted one, as the present-day rules of ethnomusicology demands. The comments on the folk culture and the extensive introductory note on the music are valuable aids to the comprehension of the structure of traditional music and to the manner in which this is expressed in the Greek folk song. Moreover, for each song is presented the complete text as well as the melody, which is given in the musical script (stave), while the four CDs accompanying the book comprise all the musical material the latter contains. Thus the present publication is addressed not only to the lover of folk music, but also to the scholars and researchers, who will now have at their disposal scientifically processed material that completely covers the music of Skyros. It is easy to see that the significance of this study is not limited to the island of Skyros alone, but constitutes an important contribution to ethnomusicological research regarding all of Greece.
