Poet, songwriter and performer of Maya descent, Sara Curruchich skilfully blends elements of her culture with cumbia, rock, reggae, son jarocho, and chacarera, applying her powerful voice to her socially committed lyrics sung in her native language, Kaqchikel, as well as Spanish. Her songs address vital issues of the indigenous struggle against racism and patriarchal oppression, while her own experiences of marginalisation inspire her messages of support for Latin America's LGBTQ+ communities, calling to halt hate speech and violence. Appointed as an ambassador for UN Women's Fund for Gender Equality in Central America, her 2024 Indigenous Woman tour has taken her and the irresistibly affirmative energy of her four-woman band, across the US, Canada and Europe, including major festivals such as SXSW, Folk Alliance, Calgary Folk and Colours of Ostrava in the Czechia.
