Wilson Café

Wilson Café was born in Salvador, the capital city of Bahia. He is a great researcher on Brazilian Northeastern popular rhythms, which he refers to as “rhythms that go up and down along with the sound of the tide”. The result of this research, that covered 4 Brazilian states (Pará, Alagoas, Ceará and Bahia), can be found in his second album, “O tempo e a maré”, released by Dabliú Discos.

Yet, in the album, he doesn’t reproduce these rhythms identically, nor recalls to their ritualistic traits. On the contrary: he rebuilds them, by adding them lessons learned from masters, like Jackson do Pandeiro and Gordurinha, and contemporary elements, such as electric guitars and bass, cello, flutes, and even a DJ, in intricate arrangements. The percussive essence of rhythms like “embolada”, “maracatu”, “coco” and “ciranda” are the basis for songs influenced by black music, blues, hip-hop. All of those perfectly mixed and with a taste of a unique – and truly new – recipe made with known ingredients.
