Markus CM Schmidt, started as projectionist, at ARRI-Filmlab and on an Oxberry-Printer. He worked as film-editor’s assistent in Munich before he started studying film-editor at the filmschool in Potsdam-Babelsberg. During his studies he directed his first feature-length documentary on Holocoust-Survivors, that is shown as part of the permanent exhibition at the Sachsenhausen-Memorial. Since he finished filmschool in ’98, he works as film-editor for feature length cinema movies as well as for Reportages. His education on 'old-style film-techniques' is the basis for his up-to-date Visual-FX, Graphics and Compositing skills. He records original sound on his own projects.

In early 2003 he started the filmmakers initiative freedom2speak.net against the upcoming war in Iraq during the Berlinale Film Festival, that was projected on the same festival 12 days later. He directs TV-Reportages as well as feature-length cinema documentaries.

Die OMNIVERSAL EARKESTRA Bigband aus Berlin macht sich auf den Weg nach Mali um die legendären Musiker aus dem Mali der Siebziger Jahre und ihre Musik live zu erleben. Was daraus entstand ist das Projekt LE Mali70.
Mit einer Förderung durch den TURN-Kulturfonds ging OMNIVERSAL EARKESTRA auf Tour quer durch Mali, wo sie legendäre Musiker wie Cheick Tidiane Seck, Sory Bamba, Abdoulaye Diabaté und Salif Keita trafen. Während der Reise zu den Heimatorten der heute in der westlichen Welt nahezu vergessenen Bands wie der Mystère Jazz de Tombouctou, der Kanaga de Mopti, der Super Bitons de Segou und der Railband aus Bamako entstanden eigenwillige moderne Bigband-Arrangements der alten Stücke, die in der Abschlusswoche im ehrwürdigen Moffou-Studio von Salif Keita gemeinsam aufgenommen wurden. Der Roadtrip der Band, die besonderen künstlerischen musikalischen Erfahrungen bei den Sessions und im Studio wurden von einem Filmteam begleitet, um sie für das Publikum der Live-Show erfahrbar zu machen.
Le Mali70 Earkestra ist eine abendfüllende Show bestehend aus einem Live-Konzert und einem Dokumentarfilm über die Berliner Bigband OMNIVERSAL EARKESTRA und legendäre Musiker aus Mali, z.B. SALIF KEITA, SORY BAMBA und CHEICK TIDIANE SECK.
