Folk'Avant
Contemporary folk music from Sweden/Finland.
Folk’Avant’s music is a mix of warmth and darkness, it is as sad as it is hopeful. With its own lament it creates a trail through the nordic landscape that transports the listener to places that feel both familiar and foreign. The music breathes of mystique and enchants the listener when threads of traditional tunes, urban contemplations and twisted melodies are woven together.
Swedish/Finnish trio Folk’Avant entered the folk music scene in 2014 and released their debut album ”GRYNINGSLAND” in 2017. The album was embraced by both audiences and critics alike and the ensemble has been touring their home countries and abroad. While writing material for the awaited second album, the trio has been delving into the historical bonds between Sweden and Finland and writing music for a computer game set in the nordic landscapes.
Folk’Avant comprises of Anna Wikenius, Maija Pokela and Anna Rubinsztein in the instrumental setting of vocals, kantele and fiddle. Having graduated from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm(SE) and the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki(FI) the members are part of well known constellations such as Kongero, ENKEL, Kardemimmit and the string quartet KVARTS.
Folk’Avant has been nominated in the German Critic’s Choice Awards category ”Album of the Year” (2017) and has been chosen to represent Sweden in both the European Broadcasting Union Folk Festival in Moscow (RU, 2018) and Nordic Folk Alliance (2019). It has also been a recipient of the prestigious scholarship for ensembles from The Royal Academy of Music (2018).
