Galandum Galundaina is part of the genealogy of a region with a unique musical, ethnographic and linguistic heritage. Over the past 20 years, the group has contributed to the study, preservation and regeneration of the cultural identity of Terras de Miranda, in the Northeast Transmontano region, rediscovering Mirandese roots music and championing the endangered Mirandês language. They build many of their own instruments – bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, flutes and percussion – after the Mirandese style, to produce the area's unique sounds, tunings and tones, which the award-winning ensemble have carried to festival stages in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Morocco, Cuba, Cape Verde, Brazil, Mexico and Malaysia. At this Opening concert they will be joined by Pauliteiros de Miranda - eight dancers who perform the region's emblematic, and centuries-old, stick-dance.
