Indian Ocean Music Market

A major announcement. A major new music market. Scènes Australes presents, in partnership with the Conseil Régional of Reunion Island, the first Indian Ocean Music Market. Our ambition is to create a professional networking event to encourage exchange, encounters and opportunities for artists and professionals of the Indian Ocean region – and to expand their outreach to programmers and music industry professionals from Europe, the Americas, Australia and Asia. A parallel interest will be in furthering the professionalization of local artists and industry as they benefit from meeting and networking with one another and from mentoring by international colleagues.

The Indian Ocean Music Market will be held from the 7th to the 9th of June, 2011, in the days leading up the Sakifo Festival, Edition No 8 which runs from the 10th through 12th of June in La Reunion.

CONFERENCES, NETWORKING, ARTIST SHOWCASES...

Main objectives of the Indian Ocean Music Market:

- To enable Indian Ocean artists to get exposure in, and to export themselves to, major new markets throughout the world.
- To enable Indian Ocean entrepreneurs and companies to find new markets within the region and internationally.
- To develop a new network between artists and professionals of the music industry within the region and then to create bridges to similar networks internationally.
- To further professionalize artists and industry professionals to meet new regional and international challenges through seminars, mentoring and skills exchanges with worldwide colleagues.

OPPORTUNITIES

Music isn't just culture, its industry is a dynamic form of economics and opportunities abound when a sector professionalizes and develops music as a form of both local and of export income.

Over the past 20 years, both Reunion Island music and the industry that sustains it have developed, matured, grown. It is now time to take more of these rich local traditions and link them and their professionals to others in the Indian Ocean region and then to cast them out into the world's great music marketplaces.

The Indian Ocean region offers a large market potential. In recent years new music markets have appeared in South Africa and Australia, complimenting those that already exist in Europe and North America. Now the time has come for our region. The time has come to create an event and establish partnerships with companion events throughout the world.

Reunion Island is privileged by its geographical location and plays a leading role as nautical meeting point in the vast ocean region. Where better to hold a Music Market that will be an economic and cultural asset to its neighboring countries and provide a tourist-friendly point of entry to European and international partners? With the island's infrastructure, beauty and holiday charm, here will be the ideal place to introduce a highly professional but underrepresented music scene. In a world always looking for new music and new traditions, we propose to make La Reunion and the Indian Ocean music scene the 'next big thing' on international stages.

The Music Market will represent all manner of regional local musical culture, both traditional and popular. The presentations will represent an exchange between participants, taking into consideration differences in local economies, conditions and capacities from each participating country.

IMPLEMENTATION

To be efficient and competitive the Market must be innovative and ambitious. Adopting as its informal motto 'Get off the beaten path,' the event will engage locals and visitors by highlighting all that makes the region unique. The charm of Reunion Island will facilitate the event organization in a spirit of conviviality.

The launch of the event requires the spirited participation of professional guests from each music network, including Scènes Australes, given its experience and knowledge in the field, and the support of the world music network Zone Franche.

Co-Managing Directors are Mr. Gerald Seligman (ex-General Manager of WOMEX; President, Caravan Arts Consultancy) and Ms. Dominique Thiange (European consultant, Cultural Industries, ACP; Conseil Francophone de la Chanson). Additional coordination will be provided by Zone Franche (Christine Semba, Director and Camille Damoiseau, Coordinator) on the organization of the conferences, workshops and ”one to one” sessions

WORKSHOP SESSIONS

A series of workshops will be offered where professionals will meet on a broad variety of topics related to the music industry in the Indian Ocean. They will share ideas, contacts and concepts in order to improve the career development conditions for Indian Ocean artists and entrepreneurs.

The workshops will be divided into two general categories: Practical and Organizational. The Practical will feature sessions on touring, venues and festivals, management, labels, self help and press and promotion. The Organizational sessions will include networking and master classes, including the sharing of best practices, for local, regional and international interaction.

Workshop will be held in Saint-Pierre City.

MEET A PRO

Artists and local professionals will be able to meet international colleagues (producers, labels, managers and more) in dynamic speed dating sessions. Over two days, all professional guests will make themselves available for 2-hour sessions where local and regional delegates can circulate for focused, 15-minute encounters. Delegates coming to both sessions will find scores of professionals to consult with.

SHOWCASES

While the final program is still subject to change, here are some of the many artists scheduled to perform:

Lo Gyro (Réunion), Hanitra (Madagascar), Blue King Brown (Australia), Kaf Malabar (Réunion), Mix N Blend (South Africa), Simangavole (Réunion), Ykson (New Caledonia), Davy Sicard (Réunion), Grace Barbe (Seychelles), Nathalie Natiembe (Réunion), BlackMenBluz (Mauritius), Firmin Viry (Réunion), Kartic and Gotam (India), Blackroots (Zanzibar), The Bombay Royale (Australia), Tsenga 2 (Comores), Ziskakan (Réunion) and more…
