Daddo - The Ladino

Renowned singer and actress Daddo is back with
The Ladino Voice, a collection of fresh
interpretations of
classic mediterranean melodies.

Ladino is a Hispanic dialect. Large Ladino-speaking
Jewish communities flourished across the
mediterranean until the mid-20th Century, with
notable concentrations in Tessaloniki and Izmir.
The Ladino songbook is full of famous melodies of
heartbreak, exile and love, such as ‘Morenika’ (‘The
Black-haired Girl’; track 10 on the CD) and ‘Adio
Kerida’ (‘Goodbye Darling’; track 6).

Daddo was born in the small Israeli town of Acre
(Akko), near the Lebanese border,a town marked by
the peaceful co-existence of Jews and Arabs. From
childhood, Dganit was exposed to the rich
traditions of the Ladino language and culture, and
fell in love with them.

Daddo grew up to be a star of the Israeli National
Theatre -“HABIMA”,
performing to great acclaim before audiences in
Europe, Asia, and the Americas. A fruitful musical
partnership with multitalented musician Yuval
Keydar has led to several joint musical projects,
ranging from ethnically-tinged electronic dance
music, to powerful original ballads, to worldwide
tours with raconteur extraordinaire Amos Ettinger.
Many of these projects are available in record form
on the FaMusic label.

Daddo's newest record, The Ladino Voice
(FMR006), realizes her dream of giving new life to
the old Ladino melodies. Drinking songs (‘La Vida
Do Por El Raki’), love songs, and improbable tales
of women giving birth to camels (‘Osasa’) were all
treated to lush, modern arrangements, performed
by a large ensemble including the Middle East’s
premier session guitarist, Avi Singolda, and
virtuoso Double-bass player Nir Komforty of the
Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Arab percussionists
Samy Renawy and Mahran Moreb complete the rich
tapestry of sound.

Featuring Arab and Jewish musicians playing
modern arrangements of ancient mediterranean
songs, The Ladino Voice crosses cultural and ethnic
boundaries, carried by the powerful voice of Daddo.
Daddo and her ensemble are now touring Europe
and the world in support of The Ladino Voice,
bearing the enchantment of Ladino song and
culture.
