The projet « Tal Coal » (pronounced « t.a.l kɔ.a.l ») took shape in 2018 when Maud Herrera (ex-Cocanha) composed a song based on Audre Lorde's poem Coal. Since then, Maud tried to weave a comtemporary music, improvised and not, instrumental and vocal. The starting point had been the listening of the sound textures of the viola, as well as of the field recordings of songs and fiddle from Haut-Agenais, and from other parts of the South-West of France. To work in solo is far from being solitary : a diversity of musical memories are convoked...
Wedding songs colected by the famous and missed Pèire Boissière ; Venezuelan folk songs ; also appeared the souvenir of Nico's voice from the Velvet Underground ; evocations of the viola exercices on the Suites of J.S Bach or of the musical theme of Theos Angelopoulos's film Ulysse's gaze, composed by Eleni Karaindrou...
Through the tradition of composing by ear, without writing a proper score, also with experimental protocols based on fragments, repetitions or modality, Tal Coal's challenge is to draw, as says about birds the philosopher Vinciane Despret, a « vocal territory », made of snatches, melodies and relief ; maybe and hopefully to experiment with audience a different sensation of time and space.
Tal Coal is an open piece, a work in progress.
