Hella

Hi! We are Hella, a vocal folk ensemble from Belgium. We create a cappella music inspired by traditional melodies in Dutch. Our music interweaves traditional and contemporary elements, showcasing the female voice in all its diversity and beauty.

Hella was founded in 2022 by the sisters Ahanna and Kalinka Verschraegen. Our journey in vocal music and composing brought us to Eline De Coninck and Lotte Pauwels.

In January 2024, we were awarded the Flanders Folk Award for Most Promising Band, which gave strong recognition to our work. Some words of the jury: “Hella moves between traditions and a contemporary sound, with clear international potential.”

In October 2025, we released our first album Meeremin. The music of our album is inspired by women who have used their voices throughout the centuries and with our compositions we offer a contemporary perspective on these traditional tales and stories. With this album, we toured 12 concerts across Belgium. A highlight was our concert in a sold-out Minard in Ghent (capacity 270). We were invited by Klara (national radio) to perform and talk about the album, and received positive reviews both nationally and internationally. The album was ranked 25th on the World Music Charts Europe in December 2025.

“A breathtaking debut album without a single weak moment. Four outstanding voices lifting each other to greater heights.” - Rootstime (BE).
“Meeremin is an absolute dream of inspiring vocals and mind-bending harmonies, a joyous package of polyphonic tales.” - Folk Wales Magazine (UK)
