Freelance music historian, critic, broadcaster and obituarist specialising in folk, tradition-based, improvised and and non-western classical music. South Asian folk, popular, art and devotional music a forte. Plus some jazz, rock, western classical music, art, and lit crit (Beat and German-language literature) and politics to spice and jolly up the gumbo.

Part of the core team of Germany's Rudolstadt Festival since July 1994 as editor/writer of the English-language festival programme notes and consultant for artist billing..

Long-time collaborator with the Kronos Quartet, including conceiving and realising their Grammy-nominated You've Stolen My Heart (2005) project of Bollywood and Bengali film composer R.D. Burman's work with the renowned vocalist Asha Bhosle.

Essayist and ‘adviser’ (consultant) for OUP's Oxford Dictionary of National Biography since 2000. With effect from 2016, the most published essayist on British folk music- and Scottish Traveller-related subjects in the DNB's 200-year-old history.
