Ti’kaniki represent a new generation carrying forward the vibrant tradition of Maloya music of La Reunion. Based in Lyon, France, the band is a collective of Reunion Island natives and metropolitans of diverse origins, all sharing a passion for Maloya, a percussion-based cultural treasure with a complex and painful history, born in slavery, developed clandestinely and banned by the French authorities until the 60s. Since then artists such as Danyel Waro, Groove Lele, and René Lacaille have brought it to the world. Ti’kaniki's musicians from La Reunion have learnt from and played with these three masters and together with their cosmopolitan comrades-in-art create a fresh setting for Maloya where the driving percussion meets graceful choral chants and soulful vocals.
