Lapua-Uusi-Guinea’s sophomore album Taklax/Remix consists fully of the band’s reimagined arrangements of trad tunes recorded from the legendary Finnish-Swedish fiddler Johan Erik Taklax (1856–1948). The arrangements collide Ostrobothnian spelman tradition with influences from western and southern Africa, Baroque, Celtic and Iberian traditions, Scandinavian jazz, tango nuevo and Erik Satie; archive numbers are followed by nicknames given by the band.
“Some of the best I’ve heard after the pandemic.”
–Thomas Fahlander, Lira
