Music of the Present Time
A piano, a stool: this is the stripped-back setting Etienne Manchon has chosen to play his "music of the present time".
While the songs of Broadway musicals have shaped the repertoire of jazz standards for a century, Etienne's world has always drawn on a wide variety of music, from the Baroque opera of Henry Purcell to the modern jazz of Carla Bley, by way of female figures of French-language song such as Barbara or Pomme.
In this concert, the pianist unveils his own standards and weaves a thread between all these worlds, combining them with the art of improvisation, which he masters brilliantly. Melodies burst forth and intertwine, worlds collide, united by the finely chiseled, spellbinding tone of Etienne Manchon's piano.
