Emmi Kujanpää is a singer and kantele player specialized in Finnish and Bulgarian folk music. Her album "Nani" was released in 2020 by Nordic Notes.
Emmi Kujanpää - a Sibelius Academy and University of Helsinki musicology graduate - is a singer, kantele player and composer who specializes in Finnish and Bulgarian folk music. She completed part of her Master’s degree studies at the Music Academy of Plovdiv, in Bulgaria.
Kujanpää’s first solo album Nani (Nordic Notes 2020) was recorded as an international production at the Bulgarian National Television studios in Sofia and Musiikkitalo in Helsinki in 2018 and 2019. At the moment she is searching for an agency for the Nani project.
The Nani album consists of solo vocals and instrumental kantele parts that engage in dialogue with the choir parts performed by the Bulgarian Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares Vocal Academy. In addition to the choir, guests on the album include the Finnish musicians Jarkko Niemelä (trumpet/vocals), Eero Grundström (harmonium/vocals) and throat singer Sauli Heikkilä.
After the album release, the Nani album was ranked at the World Music Charts Europe list as #13 in February 2020, #12 in March 2020, #13 in April 2020. Nani album has been also nominated for The German Record Critics' Award – Longlist 2/2020 (vom Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik e.V.) in Folk and Singer/Songwriter Category in April 2020.
In autumn 2020 Emmi Kujanpää works in an artist grant funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation and she writes a Ph.D. research about transnational Bulgarian folk singing.
