'Soba' means 'big house' in Dioula, the Mandinka language spoken mainly in Burkina Faso, and Soba is the roof under which three friends gather to revive the links between Mandingo song and Mississippi blues, manifesting a pulsating Afro-blues from deep collective experience. Having met while working on various projects together, the trio began building a Soba of their own six years ago, based on shared blues foundations. Lyrics and melodies flow from Moussa Koita, singer and multi-instrumentalist from a renowned Burkina Faso griot family, who has collaborated with artists such as Sam Mangwana, Kady Diarra and Boubacar Traoré. French harmonica legend Vincent Bucher's decades of blues roots research inform his incisive playing, echoing Koita's singing and meshing with the polyrhythmic grooves emanating from Congolese drum maestro Émile Biayenda. Soba's singular sound bridges continents and centuries.
