Allan Harris, the Brooklyn-born, Harlem-based artist, is widely celebrated for his remarkable talents as a jazz vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter. His versatility and passion for storytelling through music are at the heart of his acclaimed production Cross That River, a powerful exploration of the untold stories of Black Cowboys in the American West. Set against the backdrop of post-Civil War America, this narrative amplifies the voices of men and women of color who shaped the West, shedding light on their struggles and triumphs.

Musically, Cross That River blends jazz, blues, country, and gospel, reflecting the diverse soundscape of the American frontier. Harris's compositions infuse traditional jazz rhythms with soulful melodies and the storytelling power of folk and country music, creating a rich and evocative sound. This genre-defying approach underscores the emotional depth of the narrative, giving audiences a unique musical experience that mirrors the history it portrays.

Cross That River originated as a song cycle and has since evolved into a profound theatrical experience. After premiering at the O'Neill Theater Center and the New York Musical Theatre Festival, the production has grown into a sweeping examination of American history, capturing both the hardships and the beauty of life in the West for people of color during a tumultuous period. Supported by grants from Chamber Music America and selected as a 2024 PAD (Performing Arts Discovery) project by the Western Arts Alliance, Cross That River transcends the stage, offering educational opportunities in schools, museums, and performing arts centers. Harris’s children's adaptation is also featured in the Kennedy Center's Distance Learning program, ensuring that young students nationwide learn about the often-overlooked Black West.

Acclaimed by the New York Times as a "protean talent" and hailed by Tony Bennett as his favorite singer, Allan Harris has used his platform to amplify these important yet often overlooked stories. From 2021 to 2024, Cross That River has toured nationally, and now Harris invites audiences worldwide to experience this riveting portrayal of American history. In this powerful production, music and storytelling come together to reveal a forgotten chapter of the West.
