Papa Ikot, It's the most ambitious personal musical project of his creator, the virtuoso drummer from Ecuatorial Guinea, Mr.Alex Ikot Batua, which, along their extensive musical career, has maturing the necessary material in order to give life to a band where he summarize he's knowledge about the melodies and rhythms of several countries and regions of Africa where he was traveling before jump to Europe, where, at the moment he lives, he defines his own style like, AFROPOP.
Also was playing around Europe and other continents like America and Asia with bands from several nationalities, have established their residence in cities like Amsterdam, Bonn, Paris and finally Madrid where has decided make real his dream.
Making a very select approach, was choosing to the musicians with which at the moment share this project, giving rise to a formation of very varied, and origin, with musicians who have known assimilate the essence of the African rhythms without deserting to the culture and music where they proceed.
This fact that enriches a repertoire so selected with many shades, where rhythms like the Bangambe, Doom doom ba, Mballack, Soukous or Bikutsi woks perfectly with melodies and arrangements from Jazz and from Flamenco, being rhythmic-harmonic really surprising formulas.
This special repertory, because it has delicate moments tipical of a jazz-club, as well as rhythm and lirics would make dance to the assistants to any type of festival.
The musicians selection, has not been easy, although the African community in Madrid is alright nurtured with good musicians, Alex has preferred to surround himsel with people from other musical environments in order to give the band a more original character and fresh, getting a plural music with the rhythmic forcefulness that Africa always prints so to their music and the subtlety of melodies tunes to the jazz, gathering many styles in one alone.
