The advanced level repertory, radif-e `âli, of Ostâd `Ali-Akbar Shahnâzi comprises five dastgâhs (shur, mâhur, segâh, chahârgâh, homâyun) and five âvâzes ('abu`atâ, bayât-e tork, afshâri, bayât-e esfahân). Although this radif has originally been composed on the basis of the performance techniques of the târ, it has not been limited to the repertory of this instrument. Amongst masters of the previous generation, Ostâd Shahnâzi was the only one who, in addition to transmitting the classical radif, the version of his father, Aqâ Hossein-Qoli, also composed and performed a radif of his own. This radif is full of metric pieces, zarbis, and can be regarded as a complementary repertory for Persian classical music pedagogy, especially the advanced performance techniques of the târ, reflecting the special features of his performance style, which is undoubtedly a sign of continuity of creativity and innovation in the tradition of Persian classical music. The present collection, performed and recorded in 1977, represents the unrivaled strength and supreme performance techniques of Ostâd `Ali-Akbar Shahnâzi even while he was in his 80s.
