A collection of about 14 to 21 different maqâms, called the ancient maqâms, makes an important part of the music of Kermânshâhân. These maqâms are also known as being "Qeyr-e yâri:", "Qeyr-e Kalâm" and "Qeyr-e haqqâni". Such terms are actually used to distinguish these maqâms from the sacred ones (the ritual hymns of the Yârasân) known as the kalâm. Tanbur is the most important musical instrument in performing the ancient maqâms, although certain maqâms are also performed on such instruments as Sornâ, Dohol, Dozaleh, Narme-nây and Shemshâl.
