The traditional repertory of Persian classical music is called the radif. It is a collection of model melodies, called the gushes, traditionally accomodated into twelve cycles on the basis of their underlying modal schemes. There are seven primary and five, or rather six, secondary cycles respectively called the dastgâh and the âvâz. The dastgâh/âvâz may be defined as a multi-modal cyclic structure. In each dastgâh/âvâz always one main mode predominates. This main mode is introduced in the opening gushe or the darâmad of the given cycle. There are also a number of other primary, secondary and/or transposed modes introduced in each cycle.
