The present collection includes three CDs of Gilân Music, with a total time of over 200 minutes. The whole collection is comprises of 78 tracks, out of which 10 tracks represent previously released material, work of certain artists which have now passed away. Other 68 tracks are recordings done by myself in Gilân province, north of Iran, in the duration of June 2005 until May 2006. Nearly all rural regions of Gilân, including Anzali, Fuman, Rasht, Sowme'e-Sarâ, Rudbâr, Âstârâ, Siâhkal, Lâhijan, Langrud, Amlash, Châboksar, Rudsar, and Râmsar have been observed in this review. By the term music of Gilân, I mean all musical works that are played or heard in this area. The following points have been followed in selection of pieces:
1. The piece has to show the major repertory of Gilân music, and through it one can grasp an idea of sornâ and lale repertory in different regions and would be able to compare and judge them. Try has also been made that of all popular songs one sample is included, i.e. samples of Sharafshâhi, Ghorbati, Aziznegâri, Nowruzkhâni, Gâresari, Châvushi, and other songs and song-cycles.
2. The collection has to show the listener the functional role of music in Gilân, including its role in agriculture, herd-breeding. wakes, wedding ceremonies, funerals, etc.
3. The collection has been intended to show the array of diverse instruments of the region, including sornâ, lale, naqâre and tasht, as well as Gilâni kamânche, karnâ, goshâkh, galpishây, karp, some of which are for the first time ever appeared in a single collection.
4. The collection by its pieces serves as well as an obituary to great master musicians of Gilân.
