A fascinating dialogue between roots music and avant-garde

Mâäk Kojo is an exciting voodoo-jazz and dance project with roots in Brussels and Benin. An encounter between two families of musicians: on the one hand the Mâäk collectif around Laurent Blondiau (BE), on the other hand the Anagoko family (BEN). They fuse their repertoires and cultural traditions, resulting in a fascinating dialogue between Western jazz and voodoo-trance from West-Africa, completed with surprising visual effects by Sam Mary (FRA).

Each time they play together, an organic, common language originates. The compositions, where the orchestrations go from duo to tutti, are very spontaneous and improvised but also orchestrated: the ensemble has precise, melodic, harmonic and rhythmic functions. After tours in 2010, 2012 and 2018, Mâäk Kojo plans touring through Benin and Europe in 2020 and 2021.
