Amsterdam-based band Fra Fra Sound is celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2015. African, Caribbean, Latin American, soul and funk music are blended into their own unique and compelling sound. Founded in 1980 as a celebratory vehicle for the Surinamese music styles kaseko, kawina and winti, Fra Fra Sound has evolved into one of the most exciting presenters of world music today.
'Fra Fra' has several meanings: it means hybrid, but also different, mysterious - the invisible connection. Fra Fra is also the name of a tribe in Northwest Ghana, the Fra Fra people. In that sense the band's name reflects the historical relationship between music, dance, religion and lifestyle from the African Diaspora and West Africa. In an organic and always swinging way, Fra Fra provides insight into the original relationship between Surinamese kaseko, American jazz and African rhythms.
As global ambassadors of African-Caribbean crossover Fra Fra Sound have astaunded audiences at festival, concert hall, and club performances around the world:
Africa: Mali, Morocco, South Africa, Ghana, Zanzibar, Burkina Faso, Mayotte, Senegal
Europe: Netherlands, Belgium, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Turkey
Caribbean: Cuba, Aruba, Curacao, Jamaica
Central America: Guatemala
South America: Suriname, Brazil
United States: New York, Chicago, Cleveland, New Orleans
The musicians of Fra Fra Sound are inspired by the latest news, trends and topics. A major influence are the many collaborations with musicians from other parts of the world, such as MALI JAZZ Project (1999) with Toumani Diabate, Vieux Kante, Keletigui Diabate and Bassekou Kouyate or WILD COAST TO SAHARA with Majid Bekkas.
Each collaboration has left its traces in the music of Fra Fra Sound, but as the musicians say 'we always sound like us.'
Fra Fra Sound is available for booking in 2016-2017.
