Roger Damawuzan is one of the most influential figures of the 1970's African funk scene, known as the 'James Brown of Lomé' after the wild success of his first record, Wait for Me, which established his own style of American soul funk reacquainted with traditional Gazo, Akpesse and Kamou rhythms. As singer and frontman of Les As du Bénin and later The Rickers Orchestra and The Melo-Togo Orchestra, he put the funk in Togo and Bénin throughout the ‘80s, scoring a string of successes on his own Tropicana label. In 2015 French Afro-Soul specialist label, Hot Casa released the Wait for Me compilation of his most famous songs. Now comes Seda, a brand-new roots-suffused album with the participation of arch analogue Afro-funkers Vaudou Game, setting the scene for a long overdue international breakthrough.
