The result of an educational project in the Department of Folk and Traditional Music in the Vigo School of Arts and Crafts (the current ETRAD), Sondeseu was created in 2001 as the first permanent orchestra in Europe with a folk music repertoire. It comprises over forty musicians who perform traditional Galician music specially arranged for a broad combination of instruments: hurdy-gurdies, harps, bagpipes, voices, percussion, fiddles, bouzoukis, double bass, and flutes. It is devoted to playing tunes from the Galician oral tradition, arranged for this ensemble by its members and by the heads of each section.
Its emergence in the folk landscape, in the 2004 Ortigueira International Festival of the Celtic World, was welcomed by the most diverse audiences, both in Spain and in the rest of Europe. The combination of purely traditional instruments plus others from more modern folk provenances produces a unique sound that is as characteristic of Sondeseu as the energy flowing from their stage, which invariably spreads to all attendees.
Besides Ortigueira, other highlights in its CV are the concerts at the Cork CeltFest (Ireland, 2005 and 2006), the Etnohelmántica Festival (Salamanca), the Helsinki Music Centre (Finland), the Inter-Celtic Festival of Lorient (Brittany, 2006 and 2009), Expo-Zaragoza 2008, Celtica Aosta (Italy), Ibiza, the Jovellanos Theatre of Oviedo, the Jaca Auditorium, the Prince of Asturias Auditorium or the Price Circus-Theatre of Madrid. Ibiza, Hospitalet, Opening Concert of Celtic Connections 2019,…………...
In 2010-2012, Sondeseu led the ENFO (European Network of Folk Orchestras) project. This network, with the support of the European Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency and aiming to foster the creation of new folk music orchestras throughout Europe, was geared to consolidating a stable frame for participation and exchange around music education.
