Maré, músicas e artes atlánticas celebrated this 2022 its third edition in Santiago de Compostela, the first after the pandemic. From the 21st to the 25th of September, the former Cantos na Maré will once again be held in different locations of the Galician capital, such as the Principal Theatre, the Galicia Auditorium, the Sala Capitol, Praza da Quintana and other monumental heritage sites , clubs and the San Domingos de Bonaval park, epicenter of the festival where the Xacobeo stage was located.

Maré, Músicas e Artes atlánticas 2022 has continued to bet on female and youth creation, experimentation, new artistic languages and cultural diversity, focusing on those territories with which Galicia shares linguistic, historical and other sentimental ties on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to a wide Galician representation, the program included artists from other communities of the State, such as Catalonia, Asturias or Euskadi, and from other countries and territories such as Angola, Brazil, Portugal, Rajasthan in India, the Balkans, Argentina, France, the Western Sahara , Guinea-Bissau or Scotland.

The 2022 edition of the Maré festival also hosted two European premieres: Chico César's new tour presenting his tenth album, "Vestido de amor", at the Sala Capitol, and the Carioca brass band that revolutionized the concept of fanfare in Brazil, the Orquestra Voadora, which turned the streets of the city into a carnival party. The festival also included a premiere in Spain: the legendary Gaelic music band Capercaillie who brought to Galicia the only show they offered with the BBC Scottish Symphonic Orchestra, accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic of Galicia. This was the inaugural show celebrated at the Galicia Auditorium, under the direction of Paul Daniel and with new orchestrations that made it a unique concert.

The different stages of the Maré festival welcomed the multiplicity of voices from a committed world, especially among women. Maré 22 wanted to show the strength of female voices such as that of the Angolan Pongo, the Saharawi Aziza Brahim, the Brazilian Dandara Manoela or the Argentine Sofía Viola. Also the Galician artist A Pedreira, who closed the festival with their first solo album "Segmento Cantabrico", Guadi Galego with the end of the "Costuras" tour, and other emerging artists such as Antía Muíño or Catuxa Salom.

A melting pot of musical genres and shared cultures, at the Maré 22 festival pop, soul, blues, electronic music, experimental music, rap, dub, kuduro, bulu and bikutsi rhythms, gqom, batida, amapiano, afrobeats, semba, kizomba or folk sounded along with other roots music written and sung in different languages, from Galician to Portuguese through Rajasthani, Kimbundu, Catalan, Basque, Scottish, Asturian, English, French, Arabic or Spanish. On Sunday the 25th, the Maré festival once again celebrated the European Day of Languages, with a festive day and free music in the streets of Santiago with the collaboration of Linguistic Policy.

In addition to the promotion of talent, Maré 22 maintained interculturality and tolerance as its main objectives, which translate into the search for emotion, discovery, creation and information, highlighting the importance and potential of a multicultural society. The centuries-old traditions of Rajasthan's Manganhiars, with the Barmer Boys or Fogo Fogo, the band that is turning Cape Verde's funaná into a rhythm on the dance floors in Portugal and in the Portuguese-speaking world, were other proposals for this edition. They also played live the fusion that the Frenchman James BKS, son of Mando Dibango, makes of the musical tradition along with electronic rhythms found on the African continent.

In total, maré 22 added more than 30 actions, in which anti-racist and LGTB+ civil rights, functional diversity, feminism, indigenism, equality between peoples and languages or against rural depopulation were once again a banner alongside the great challenge of change climate and the pursuit of environmental sustainability, in line with the sustainable development objectives (ODS) formulated in the Festivals strategy and Agenda 2030.

The Maré 22 festival was sponsored by Xacobeo 21·22 and included in the concertosdoxacobeo.gal program. It was also possible thanks to the support of the City Council of Santiago de Compostela, the Provincial Council of Coruña, the INAEM, Acción Cultural española and Estrella Galicia.
