Newest Album by renowned Gamelan orchestra Salukat and award winning composer Jan Kadereit. Salukat is one of the most acclaimed ensembles dedicated to contemporary ethnological music in the world. Listed in “25 best classical pieces of 2022” by the NEW YORK TIMES with their composition and performance “Likad”, they have been the focus of multiple studies and lectures (Tenzer, Smith) and toured worldwide. After having won awards for their traditional Gong Kebyar music, Salukat radically moved towards new music in 2007, becoming a major force in contemporary music. Since then, Salukat combines two sets of instruments that are tuned to different seven-note scales, therefore enriching the tonal and harmonic possibilities of Gamelan music. After releasing six critically acclaimed albums, they invited composer/percussionist Jan Kadereit in 2023 to collaborate on new music. This resulting album is full of unheard harmonies and beautifully intertwined melodies. It ranges from meditative pieces rich in sounds to burstful, highly joyous and energetic pieces that bring out the skill of the virtuosic musicians. They seem to effortlessly bend the flow of time, seemingly dancing through multiple rhythms like on the title track Áshira. In the same composition, the differently tuned sets of instruments are combined to create colors that no other ensemble in the world can replicate. A documentary about Salukat and the making of Áshira will be released alongside the album, deepening the immersion into this unique project and offering fascinating insights into this world of sounds.
