The Companyia Elèctrica Dharma was born in 1974 as a result of an approximately hippie commune. The name was inspired by the title of a Jack Kerouac's book, "The Dharma Bums, where the prophet of the "beat generation" was influenced by oriental sources. They soon found their characteristic line. They used the music they listened to when they were children, all the Catalan popular tradition, rich in melody and with a peculiar rhythm and it turned out to be fresh modernity.
The Companyia Elèctrica Dharma is a creation of the Fortuny brothers. They started playing together whem they still used shorts and they let their hair grow when that sirs have not taken their cassocks away yet . Music soon became an obsession for them and books were left on the shelves instead of that they were interested in assays. Self-learners, they preferred the stages adventure to the classrooms.
They did a repertory based upon the song "La Casa del Sol Naixent" and songs from the Beatles and the Stones and played for the forst time on a graduation party. The trio (Esteve, guitar; Joan, bass and Josep, drums) awarded some reputation in the circuit of institutes and parochial centres.
The group was growing: Carles Vidal joined them to be in charge of the bass, Joan passed on to the soprano sax and the quartet remained definitely organised as a quintet when Jordi Soley joined them on the keyboards. At the same time they created a urban commune which moved to a country house in Girona as to establish themselves in a rural commune. There, around the trees and the hills, under the sun of a spring winter, they composed the songs for their first LP "Diumenge". Dharma had just born.
Initially very influenced by Miles Davis, their style follows an evolution, the influences of the American jazz-rock melt and Dharma define a Mediterranean autochthonous sound. In summer 1975, they promote themselves through the Spanish territory after taking part in the Burgos and the Canet festivals. In a short time they became one of the most emblematic groups at that moment. More self-confident and sure about their own musical identity, their fresh style was very well welcomed by an audience that was waiting for new linesand their concerts were an example of communication.
