Was born in the Island of Mallorca where when she was a child she started to learn folk songs of the Balearic Islands.
Maria del Mar arrives to Barcelona in 1967 and begins to sing with "Els Setze Jutges", an important Group of Catalan songwriters. Then she makes her several performances and records her First EP with four folksongs from Menorca.

The following year, the censorship of Franco's regime forbids to sing one of her more popular songs "Què volen aquesta gent". At the beginning of the 70's she initiates her first performances abroad: France, Denmark and England. Throughout her career, Maria del Mar will visit Switzerland, Venezuela, Mexico, Portugal, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Greece, Tunisia, Holland, Belgium, the old Soviet Union and Japan.

In 1971, a LP where appears the songs "L'Aguila negra" and "No voldria res més ara" reaches the Golden Record in Spain.

Years later, MARIA DEL MAR BONET initiates a series of concerts in the "Plaça del Rei" of Barcelona that will have continuity until today, becoming a fixed appointment with her Barcelonian audience.

In 1981 she records his CD "Jardí Tancat", in Paris, with the musical arrangements of Jacques Denjean and the collaboration of Alan Stivell. The lyrics of this CD are based on the works of Mallorcan poets of principles of the XX century. The French Government will grant her in 1984 the Prize of the Academy "Charles Cross" to the Best foreign CD published in France. That same year is granted to her, the "Creu de Sant Jordi", the most distinction of the Generalitat de Catalunya. (Government of Catalunya)

In 1985, as a result of her interest about the music of North Africa, appears the CD "Anells d'Aigua" with the collaboration of the "Emsemble de Musique Traditionelle" of Tunisia. The same year Maria del Mar was touring with them through Spain and France.

A year later a she makes a tour around Spain and Portugal with the internationally known Brazilian Milton de Nascimento, a musical proposing of mixing of Mediterranean and Brazilian Music. Always searching for new artistic ways, in 1988, she presents along with the choreographer and Spanish dancer Nacho Duato, the Show "Arenal". The combination of songs and dance obtains an excellent feedback from the public all around the countries where they performed. Nacho Duato has created other choreographs with Music of the author and singer like "Jardí Tancat" (First Choreographic Prize of Colony, Germany). That same year MARIA DEL MAR BONET presents in the "Teatre Lliure" of Barcelona the Show "Ben a Prop" where she plays, only accompanied with the pianist Manel Camp, interpreting songs of Gershwin, Rolling Stones and Toti Soler, among others.

During 1992 she presents in the "Festival Internacional de Música de Perelada", "Cant de Benvinguda", a work framed in the field of the contemporary Music, composed and interpreted by the guitarist Feliu Gasull, the "Orquestra de Cambra del Teatre Lliure" and the Choir "Ars Nova" of Budapest. The Show receives the "National Prize of Music 1992", granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya for the diffusion of the Music of "Països Catalans".
She also presents in the "Plaça del Rei" of Barcelona her new spectacle "La Grecia de Theodorakis"; from the base of this Show, she will release a new CD in 1993 known as "El.las, Maria del Mar Bonet canta a Theodorakis".

At the beginning of 1994 Maria del Mar releases the score created by the Composer Rafael Subirachs on the poetic work of Joan Vinyolo, "Cants d'Abelone". That same year, along with the Turkish Composer and Cinema Director Zülfü Omar Livenelo, internationally known by the composition of the sound track of the film "Yol" (Gold Palm in Cannes Festival), MARIA DEL MAR BONET presents, with a great success in "Plaça del Rei" of Barcelona and within the framework of the Festival of Summer (Grec-94), the Show "Merhaba", based on adaptations of this Turkish artist.

In 1995 she presents in the Club "Riviera" of Madrid and "Plaça del Rei" of Barcelona her last CD "Salmaia", a selection of songs of different countries from the Mediterranean See(Turkey, Sicily, Greece, Naples, Ibiza...) with the musical collaboration of the "Ensemble de Musique Tradicionelle de Tunis" under the conduction of Fethi Zghonda. One of the most important cultural manifestations of Europe, the "International Festival of Edinburgh", invites Maria del Mar to present her new spectacle during two days. It obtained an excellent answer from the public and review from the critic; "One of the best voices of Europe - and possibly of the world" (Jan Fairley - "The Scotsman" and BBC Radio-Scotland, 28 of August 1995)

In 1996 guest by the "International Conference Habitat" organised by UNESCO, Maria del Mar performs with great success in a concert with more than 4000 people in Istanbul. The same year she plays for first time in Canada (Festivals of Montreal and Quebec, two of the most prestigious ones of America).

In 1997 MARIA DEL MAR BONET celebrates 30 years of dedication to Music. She makes an emblematic concert in "Palau Sant Jordi" of Barcelona in which more than 14,000 people attended. In that concert, conceived as a great celebration, and released Live Direct by the Catalan Television, she guests the most important musicians as Lluís Llach, Joan Manuel Serrat, Nena Venetsanou, Catherine Allard, Fethi Zgonda, Paco Cepero, Martirio and the University Chorale of Mallorca.

In September, invited by the "Catalan Institute of Woman" and UNESCO she plays in Thessalonica, European Cultural Capital during 1997.

1998 is a year of concerts abroad and of collaborations in works of other artists. With Amancio Prada for the CD "Rosas a Rosalía", with Loquillo in the CD "Con elegancia", with Jordi Sabatés and Rosa Vergés in the Audio-Visual project "De Granada a la Luna", a tribute to Federico García Lorca and with Jackson Browne in the CD "Canta mis canciones".

Maria del Mar has played in Glasgow (Scotland) in the "Celtic Connection Festival". In Lisbon within the "Cantigas Festival do Maio". In Stockholm and Lausana. In Fuiggi (Italy) within the Festival "Donnes and Música".

In September, she cross the Atlantic to go to Argentina. "El Cor del Temps" is released there (published by Acqua Records). Maria del Mar presents her CD in several concerts around the country: Buenos Aires, Río de la Plata and Panama. Later on, she goes to Chile to participate in a tribute concert "Con Allende siempre".

In October she tours around Morocco in five concerts: Rabat, Casablanca, Fez, Tánger and Tetuan. This tour, organised by the "Instituto Cervantes", approaches Maria del Mar Bonet to a reality that she has always perceived long before that World Music became fashionable.

MARIA DEL MAR BONET has had even time to record her new recording "Cavall de Foc" (published by PICAP), that was released on January of 1999. This last work of Maria del Mar gathers traditional songs of Catalunya, Balearic islands and Valencia that she has always liked and sings full of passion. The CD was presented in the New "Auditori de Barcelona".
