DIVANHANA: THE SEVDAH SENSATION FROM BOSNA AND HERCEGOVINA
Divanhana is a sevdah band from Bosnia and Hercegovina, noted for blending together urban traditional Balkan music in contemporary arrangements with the style of sevdalinka – a type of Bosnian folk song. The group combines an original fusion of musical styles and through the influences of pop music, classical music of the 20th Century and jazz, brings us their very own version of the sevdaha style. This is a real concert attraction, complete with volcanic eruptions of Balkan rhythms and their opposites expressed in the melancholy intimacy of sevdalinkas, the contrast between the two styles presenting a unique musical experience for every listener.
ENTERING 2020 WITH ORIGINAL COMPOSITIONS
After completing over 300 concerts to date, a successful Canadian tour and sold-out concerts in Berlin, Bern, Vienna, Istanbul, Ljubljana and Belgrade, the year 2020 will mark an important turning point for the academically-educated six-member band. The repertoire presented on their five albums so far has been exclusively comprised of redesigned traditional influences, but the creative maturity and self-confidence of the band members now requires a more prominent step forward. In the Spring of 2020, the band plan to release their sixth album, which for the first time will also include their never before heard original material.
AMBASSADORS OF BOSNIAN BLUES
In the ten years since its inception, Divanhana has become one of the most popular Balkan groups and a true ambassador of the sevdah music style – a music style globally also referred to as “Bosnian blues”, with the sensibility of the sevdalinkas often being compared to the Portugese fade style. The musical group is in the context of “world music” considered to be as much a “melting pot” of musical traditions and rhythms from Bosnia, Kosovo, Serbia, North Macedonia and Turkey as well as a “brewer” of new influences and features comparable to American Broadway actor Bradley Dean, Turkish singer and actress Suzan Kardes and Italian pianist Livio Minafro.
