Violinist Abraham Brody was born in the US but left to trace familial roots back to Europe, where his ancestors lived, in Lithuania and Ukraine. It was there the classically-trained Brody discovered a “magical” feeling in the land, and inside himself. This fertile experience helped Brody conjure an album called ‘From the Rich Dark Earth.’

Brody’s music leans heavily on Baltic folk traditions, tunes he calls “pre-Christian ritual songs.” Brody not only plays the violin but sings as well. Often vocal and violin tracks are looped and layered, producing a calmative musical hypnosis. The effect is similar to centuries-old religious and ritualistic song. Brody told writer Steve Smith he’s been “interested in shamanism for a long time.”

Brody has collaborated with performance artist Marina Abramović, and premiered work in the Barbican Centre in London to great acclaim. He is currently in the middle of a residency at National Sawdust in New York.
